GROTON — State Senator Heather Somers issued the following statement Tuesday after receiving endorsements for her reelection from NFIB Connecticut PAC, The Connecticut State Building Trades Council, Planned Parenthood Votes and The Independent Party of Connecticut.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the confidence and support placed in me by such a broad-based array of leaders in our state and look forward to continuing to build on a demonstrated track record of delivering results for the hardworking people of the 18th district and challenging the status quo in Hartford,” Somers said. “We must make Connecticut more affordable, starting by tackling the unacceptable rise in electricity costs being imposed on Connecticut families, seniors and small businesses, and create the conditions for greater prosperity in our communities by reducing unnecessary red tape that constrains economic growth, rolling back our state’s punitive tax burden and supporting a strong workforce and occupational training pipeline. I look forward to continuing to fight for these urgent priorities, leading with an independent voice focused on results and working to strengthen and protect access to high quality, affordable health care for all our citizens, especially women, if given the honor of continuing to represent the 18th district.”
“The NFIB CT PAC believes that you will be committed to the needs of thousands of Main Street small businesses and their employees in Connecticut when you are elected to serve in Hartford,” NFIB Connecticut PAC Senior State Director Christopher Carlozzi, and NFIB CT PAC Chair Wendy Traub said in a September 9 letter announcing its endorsement of Somers. “Thank you for standing with NFIB on the issues important to small business… NFIB is the leading small-business association in the nation with thousands of members in Connecticut representing a cross-section of the state’s economy.”
“The Connecticut State Building Trades Council (CSBTC) has endorsed your candidacy for State Senate!” CSBTC said in a June letter sharing their endorsement.“The CSBTC has voted to put your name on their 2024 Friend’s List. The Friend’s List is a group of candidates who have demonstrated support for issues important to our members in the unionized construction industry. The CSBTC is a diverse council representing over 13 different crafts encompassing approximately 30,000 construction workers across Connecticut.”
“It’s critical that we elect state legislators who will defend the right to make personal health decisions and ensure that access to care remains protected for everyone,” said Amanda Skinner, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood Votes! Connecticut said in a press release announcing the organization’s 2024 endorsements. “Planned Parenthood Votes! Connecticut will work tirelessly to ensure that voters know who they can trust to protect their health and rights.”
“The Independent Party represents people who think for themselves and wish to advance the welfare and well-being of Connecticut residents through common sense governance both statewide and at the local, municipality level,” The Independent Party of Connecticut states on its website. “We live in a divisive political environment, but do not look at litmus tests to qualify potential candidates, however we do look for people who want to constructively engage across the aisle and make incremental progress to issues we face here in Connecticut.”
The 18th district includes Griswold, Groton, North Stonington, Plainfield, Preston, Sterling, Stonington, and Voluntown.
